Every November, thousands of families around the country gather together for a time of Thanksgiving. They turn on their stoves (and deep fryers), cook a turkey or two with all the fixins, and set the table for a day of food, family and fun. But that’s not the case for everyone. Many Americans, one in seven, they struggle to put food on the table on a daily basis, let alone celebrating the holiday.
Here in Thurston County, it’s no different. Thousands of hungry men, women and children won’t be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal because they are too poor or unable to buy all the food many of us take for granted.
God’s Portion Food Bank, located in Yelm, Washington worked tirelessly this Thanksgiving season to provide disadvantaged families with the food they need to feed themselves and their children during this special time. God’s Portion gave away over 200 turkeys, along with all the trimmings, so that needy families in Yelm, Olympia and all around the Puget Sound region can experience a season of thanksgiving.
On Thanksgiving day God’s Portion, along with Jim Bob’s, a down home restaurant in McKenna, were able to feed several dozen families on Thanksgiving day. What a beautiful expression of God’s love.
Thanksgiving may be over until next year but it’s not too late to help.
While many people donate canned goods and packaged products throughout the year, Thanksgiving and Christmas time gives people more opportunities to feed the hungry in their communities.
Here are several ways you can help provide food for families that are lacking.
1. Donate to God’s Portion
A great way to help those in need during Thanksgiving, Christmas and beyond is to donate money and food. Volunteering during this season may seem like a great way to give back, but sometimes the effort it takes for God’s Portion to train volunteers takes away from other resources.
If you feel like you really need to volunteer, call God’s Portion to see how you can help but, in the meantime, donating cash is always a great way to help families in need.
2. Tell people about God’s Portion
It would be wonderful if there wasn’t a single hungry person on this planet but Jesus said, “The poor will be with you always.” God’s Portion knows, all too well, that there are many people in the surrounding communities that need their help. You can get the word out. By telling people about the work going on at God’s Portion, they will be able to help thousands more get the food they need to stay healthy.
If the best way for you to give is to volunteer your time, then God’s Portion gladly welcomes you. This local food bank offers several opportunities to help provide meals during Thanksgiving and beyond.
